despite hours of failed attempts to catch the smoke rising from our smoking santa I have resorted to posting this one (I really dislike the effects of using flash but I'm desperate / determined) help!
The smoke looks good but you want the background to be darker. Try to move the santa at least 4 feet away from the background, and take the shot in a dark room. You can use a desk lamp to light up the smoke so you can see it to focus. I have never tried this with an on camera flash so I am not sure how well it will work but I have read that you can get a good smoke shot with an on camera flash. I hope that helps a bit. Thank you Pam - I do tend to rush at things (and not just in photography) when I should take a little more time and think things through. I'll have another go with this before he goes back in the box.
