@gardencat Thanks Joanne, if you ask Mister Google nicely, " ruff bird images" it will show you the really elaborate male summer plumage. I haven't got a summer plumaged one yet. It develops a great mass of feathers around its head and shoulders. A "ruff", I presume it comes from the Elizabethan fashion for ruffs.
