MAGPIE by markp

MAGPIE

A very wary member of the Crow family, I have these visiting the garden, even right up to the back door, looking for food that has dropped off the feeders.
However I have not yet managed to get a nice shot of them, so this is from near a lake I visited.
We don't have these in the east, where I live. I remember how handsome I thought them the first time I saw one out in BC. Such strong and striking markings. Do they really steal shiny things?

Great shot -- there is one that occasionally drops by in my garden but are very difficult to capture --any slight movement and they are off !! -- as you say a very wary bird !

@gardencat Thanks Joanne, no I think I remember reading an article that said it was a myth that Magpies stole shiny objects.

@beryl Thanks Beryl, they have actually bred several times in the large Ash tree at the bottom of the garden, but are very hard to get close to. It was quite funny last year because both the Magpies and a pair of Crows decided that they wanted the nest. After much screaming and fighting neither used it.
