A view from the old road bridge (1961) crossing the River Mersey, looking upstream, towards the east. You can see St Mary's church in West Bank, Widnes, and Fiddlers Ferry Power Station, and in the far distance, the hills are the Pennines, regarded as the backbone of England.
However of more interest, to me at least, is the small bridge almost spanning the river. This is being built by the contractors who are in the process of building a new road bridge across the river. Using the cranes which are just about visible , they are extending it out across the river slowly from both sides, once completed it will allow them to transport the steel work over to the Widnes side ( the left).
I believe all the steelwork is being made in China (?), then shipped over, through the Port of Liverpool and then up the Manchester Ship Canal to Runcorn, where they have built a pontoon to unload the ships.
The pontoon in Runcorn is to the right, but not quite visible in this shot. Once unloaded, it will be taken over this small temporary bridge and assembled like a giant Meccano set.
Once the mighty new bridge is completed, this smaller bridge will vanish, rather like an acorn.
It is supposed to be opening in the summer of 2017, we will wait and see if they complete it on time.
Thank you to everyone for taking the time to view, and for leaving your lovely comments and Favs.
