This was taken towards the end of a long day mountain biking up into the hills.
The highlight of the day took place five minutes before I took this image.
Heading downhill quite fast, I spotted something ahead on the track, I saw where it had vanished into the heather but managed to stop quietly in the right spot.
It hadn't moved into cover very far, I found myself staring eye to eye, quite closely, with a female Capercaillie.
This is a very rare large turkey sized species of Grouse, with maybe around 1,200 birds in the UK.
She stood there for a good few seconds before she decided to go. I have had the fortune to see quite a few males over the years, but this was certainly the best views I have had of a female.
