I am pretty sure this is the same male Great Spotted Woodpecker as in the previous post.
During the thirty minutes he was away he had been very busy. A close look at his bill and chest might give you a clue.
Everyone knows woodpeckers love peanuts, they also eat seeds, and you will see them tapping into trees or probing under the bark or in the ground for grubs and insects.
What you might not know is they are also accomplished nest robbers. They will use their strong beaks to break into nest boxes or other nests and attack and eat the eggs or nestlings they find in there.
This is a rather unfortunate habit of an otherwise lovely bird. They will also eat carrion, so maybe all that blood came off something already dead, and not young birds.
