There are two churchyards in our village but I have never looked in the older one before today. Found this beautiful cross - all the carvings are made out of wood. Being a very old churchyard, the trees and bushes are very overgrown and I couldn't get a better perspective on it without the bushes objecting!! The work on this is just so beautiful
Goudhurst? What date is the memorial? I wonder how long the wood will last. It is a lovely memorial, with lots of symbolism - ivy for immortality, lilies for purity and innocence, and IHS for Jesus. My recent research has not been in vain!!
@suesouthwood I didn't know any of that! Such a lot of symbolism. Went back today to take a look at the dates - it is not that old - the oldest is 1894 - Willie Benian died at sea - it is Goudhurst - one of the Benian's was headmaster of Bethany school 1878 - 1916
@dawnee Thank you for the fav! It is the churchyard in Goudhurst in the Weald of Kent, where I live. There are several inscriptions but the oldest is 1894. The other dates are 1911 1928 1939 1961. I don't know how old the monument is though
