"The Winkle Club" in Hastings was formed in 1900 by Hastings fishermen, to help under privileged families of Hastings Old Town. Looking at their website, it would appear that each "winkler" carries a winkle shell which they must produce when challenged to "winkle up" . If they cannot do so, money goes to charity! It looks like a fun organisation! This image is part of the collection box that stands proudly in the town.
