The Four Sons of Edwards Hussey III

An oast is a building specifically designed for drying hops. These, if you look directly at the cowls, show the initials of the four sons of Edward Hussey III, Edward, William, Arthur and Henry. Another cloudy day so it is not easy to see them through the lens.
A story in every building Catherine. I like the tone you've chosen for this shot to compliment one of our most English of buildings.

@chillen our buildings have such great history. Thank you so much for commenting - cloudy days are difficult to add any interest to.

@cottiac thank you - Edward Hussey owned Scotney Castle in Lamberhurst from 1807 - 1894 - these oast houses were part of his estate

@cottiac I walk on the estate but this time, because I took the photo, I thought I should read the signs put up by the National Trust- an education for me too - when I got home I looked them up - so close to home but knew so little!!

@photobird Thank you - it was another dull, grey day, and thought the picture could do with a bit of 'warming'!

They are so interesting. I believe a lot of oast houses are converted into homes.
December 22nd, 2016
@onewing Yes they are. They make interesting homes, but it is nice to see the unconverted ones.
