I guess you haven’t heard of the Red Hat Society https://redhatsociety.montonton.com/site
Though it’s possible that the society came first I’m betting that it’s origin was a poem called “Warning” by Jenny Joseph that begins “when I am an old woman I shall wear purple with a red hat which doesn’t go and doesn’t suit me”
