All insects have 6 legs and these caterpillars are no exception. Their 6 true legs are up front ( a bit obscured by the tiny leaf) The back legs ( that look like shoes and white socks) are called prolegs. They are like tiny Velcro appendages to help the little critter walk all over the milkweed plant securely. Use the magnifier to take a closer look. :) Here is a better view of the true legs: http://365project.org/mzzhope/365/2013-08-28
I have never really bothered with macro but you have well got me hooked! Although, its the person behind the lens that makes it so wonderful ! Fav for me :-)
In keeping with your natural theme, I'll give you two options as a push challenge. Number 1 is a nighttime long exposure (>8 sec) with the moon or stars in the capture (added bonus if there is a boat as well). I read on one post you didn't have a tripod so number 1 could be difficult. Option number two is a diptych or triptych that tells a story from frame to frame. You can go here to see some examples: http://digital-photography-school.com/tell-a-story-with-a-diptych-weekly-photography-challenge-with-15-examples
Love your description of the caterpillar. It does look like black shoes with white socks. Btw, looks like you got some great challenges from Mike. Can't wait to see what you come up with.
Good shot- the other is excellent. I have been trying to plant milkweeds in my yard for years but they never seem to take. I'm not sure why. But I've always wanted to attract butterflies-especially monarchs.
@olivetreeann I wonder why?Milkweed is generally indestructible,I wonder if you had been sold the tropical variety?Another thing may be that you soil is too rich. They are true weeds liking sandy rocky soil.
