The Butter Cross Oakham by oldjosh

The Butter Cross Oakham

Today I caught the bus and made my first visit to Oakham the historic county town of England's smallest county, Rutland.
The Butter Cross is over 400 years old and being a cross preaching must have taken place here.
Stocks. the intriguing mystery as to why they have 5 holes has never been discovered
Lovely group, so much history, suppose if you didnt listen to the preacher you were put in the stocks !!!

Another wonderful old structure. I've never been to Oakham. It looks like an interesting place.

@ianjb21 Not sure if the stocks would have been under the roof as they are now but it would be one way to get a captive audience. perhaps 5 people each had one leg secured in the stocks

@susiemc Thank you Sue, My first visit, lots of lovely old houses and thatched cottages, the local history museum is very interesting. The castle was being renovated opening later in the year. I shall return in the warmer weather.

Wonderful composition of such an interesting scene ...and I enjoyed reading your narrative about it. I especially like the roof of the structure in the center.
