Village signs usually depict something of its life or history this one incorporates many aspects of the village
Coal mining - the first shaft was sunk in 1875 but abandoned in1877 due to water seeping into the shaft. In 1900 the Desford Coal Company commenced operations and the first coal produced in 1902, most of which supplied Draycott Power Station.The pit closed in 1983 and to commemorate this half a winding wheel was erected in the village
Airfield – During WWI Desford Field was used as an emergency landing ground for the RAF. It was let to Leicester Aero Club which used Tiger Moth planes in 1930
Church - St Martin’s church has a Norman font but the present building is late 13th century. The belfry contains six bells to the 17th century.
Desford has a sports club

Tropical Birdland opened in the village in 1984
Caterpillar Inc is a major employer in the village.

Railway - A single-track railway from Leicester to Swannington passed through Desford. Built in 1832 it was one of the first to be constructed in the country, passenger services were withdrawn in 1964, but still used by freight trains.
