Maybe I've been spending too much time cleaning up after my dog, but do these remind you of anything? It's a strange tree because almost all are clustered near the top.
Not just you. I photographed some lovely moss on an exposed tree root once and then realized when I looked at the pic on the computer just exactly what the root looked like.
