My husband wanted a blue and gold macaw ever since watching Dr. Doolittle on Saturday mornings back in the '70's
so when we first graduated college and got teaching jobs and felt settled enough to have a pet we got a couple cockatiels, but the pet store had a baby blue & gold and it was inevitable that we would end up bringing her home too. Lance saw her and asked what her name was and the pet store owner said. I don't know, so Lance turned to her and said, "Hi Becky." and it stuck
Over the years there has been a lot of bird brained people in my life, and a lot of attempts on my part to replicate the beauty of parrots, with pillows and painting and jewelry I made. Actually I drew the jewelry and then brought in the stone and had a real silversmith make it.
three good things
1. cats, to combat the rats the bird seed would attract
2. a growing understanding of the damage done with the wild caught parrot trade, and they don't make good pets compared to hand-raised babies anyway
3. finally wising up at 12brds ad stopping buying new ones
Great collage! When I was in college, I raised lovebirds and our hand-raised babies were super-friendly. I can't imagine that anyone would have rather had a wild-caught one. But two breeding pairs of birds and several batches of hand-fed babies was enough for me to last a lifetime. Now I just am happy feeding the wild birds outside.
Great collage and fun stories. Your bird's naming story reminds me of the time we had a goldfish tank. We had one little goldfish in it and Erick named "him" Flashlight. (o:
