I have these four paintings in my house from a man named Godfrey Brokenrope. Brokenrope used to paint these with house paint by the pony rings in front of the sarsaparilla saloon on the boardwalk In Cody, Wyoming in the 70's. He'd seem to have finished and then turn it upside down and streak it with white and people would freak out as the painting was ruined, then he'd turn it over and there would be the birch trees. He had a sign claiming to be an Indian who spoke no English unless you wanted to talk about his lord Jesus. His son painted intricate paintings of Sioux in full regalia
I'm never sure how or why my parents met him, but they were friends and we'd watch him most evenings, then get a pony ride and watch the rodeo car go by. It was something to do in town that didn't cost much, often followed by mini golf
three good things
1. childhood memories of fun, inexpensive routines
2. growing up in Wyoming
3. seeing the respect between generations in the families around us
those are darn good paintings! my father used to paint our walls with murals using just ordinary house paints instead of actually painting the walls. we loved it! i hope mr brokenrope has been recognized for this art; i believe during those times there were so many talented people but were otherwise not recognized. might visit that someday.
If you’d ever consider selling any of these please feel free to reach out, these paintings were done by my great grandfather and I’d definitely be interested and hearing more.
