“ When the sirens sounded, the first place emergency workers went was to the Surf Apartments -- and not just out of concern for the elderly residents there. Located a few steps from the water, the former Surf Hotel was severely damaged in 1964.
“This building was right in the path of that tsunami, and they figured we might be this time, too,” said Munson of the 1928-era hotel, which she said was once a brothel and was previously owned by actor Lloyd Bridges.
“What we had here last night was educated chaos. People around here know what a tsunami can do. They knew to get while the getting was good.”
