I took a trip to Skomer Island last Saturday which is a small nature reserve just off the coast of Pembrokeshire, Wales. You can't pre-book and during the breeding season, May - July, queues start outside the ticket office at 6:30 AM! With a limited number of people allowed on the Island each day it's important to get in the queue early. So for me a 4 hour drive meant leaving home at 2:30 AM.
I was number 22 in queue so easily secured a ticket. I went back to my car and broke out the NATO issue Hexamine stove and made a cup of tea - the boat didn't leave until 10.
Skomer is a very important breeding area for Manx Shearwaters and Puffins, but there's so much more to see, from long eared owls and warblers to amazing carpets of wild flowers. I could go on about it some more but I've probably already said too much!
I had a nice 5 hours on the Island wandering around watching things coming and going and got some nice pictures (I think). Here's one of my favourites - a puffin coming in to land. Hope you like it.
What a great shot, it is a fav. It is a great idea to have 7 people working on the project. I've enjoyed looking at all of the photos you folks have posted.
Wow what a fabulous capture!! I visited Skomer Island a few years ago and was blown away by the wonderful puffins just dropping down by my feet with mouths full of fish. It was such a breathtaking spectacle watching them flying in. I would love to go again!! Huge Fav!
Do I like it? I'm so impressed and rather green with envy. A brilliant image so cleverly captured. Well worth the extremely early start. I've never seen a real puffin but it's something I'd love to do one day. A big fav.
Awesome shot-haven't been to Skomer for ages! Pembrokeshire is a fabulous area. Puffin coming into land with undercarriage coming down - fav it must be.
Wonderful action capture Fav.
