What Once Was by pflaume

What Once Was

I came upon this haunting vista on a trip to the mountains recently. The water of a reservoir had receded to reveal the remains of a forest long lost to man's intervention. The heavy cloud cover and flat lighting seemed to accentuate the somber mood of the scene.
Now desolation! Wow this is an emotion evoking picture. Dr Seuss's Lorax would appreciate the reality of it

Your title captures the look and feel of this photo perfectly! Fav! It is a shame that we have lost so much that might not be recovered.

Beautiful landscape

Stunning and thought provoking! Fav

Wow! I grew up in Alaska and saw many mountains scalped by logging but I have to say it was nothing like this. Although the mountainside was stripped there was plenty of underbrush to support regrowth. This scene though is mind-blowing. Incredible image.

A fav, Lisa. You have captured this beautifully. There is a reservoir near here where we see this at low tide but not as expansive as your capture.
January 6th, 2015
very surreal, you captured the mood wonderfully.
January 6th, 2015
It look quite desolate despite there being some vegetation around.
January 6th, 2015
very depressing. I am curious, can you upload a previously taken photograph for this project?
January 6th, 2015
That is very spooky. Surely has a place on the cover of a book about deforestation!

@hinaansari Hi HIna, Thank you for your comment. The nice thing about the 365 Project website is that you can do with your project whatever you like to do. Some people are very strict (and disciplined!) about posting a photo on the date it was taken. Others are more relaxed. In my first year here, I (mostly) met that goal but am now taking a more easy going approach. This particular photo was taken on November 9th and posted to November 9th on my project. I am behind in editing! Anyway, long story short... do with your project what suits you best. Good luck and have fun!

Lisa, Just wondering aout this shot? Did you shoot bracketed images and then merge them? What program do you use for editing? Thanks, Janelle

Amy
Stunning!
January 7th, 2015
almost feels wrong liking this image - very moving and beautifully composed
January 7th, 2015
Somber scene, well composed, captured and presented. It's a graveyard of trees. Just think, the pines in the distance have known their brothers were there all along.

@stuckinoz Hi Janelle, Thank you for your comment. This is a single image. I processed it in Lightroom to adjust for all the basic things like exposure, contrast, etc. I then took it into OnOne and applied the "Dynamic Contrast" tool which is like clarity but more refined to the different parts of an image. I really like it for landscapes. Finally, I used Alienskin Exposure 6 to tweak the color although I don't think much was really changed there. Can't quite recall. :) That's my usual run through though. I hope that helps!

@stuckinoz Janelle, Here is a vimeo tutorial about OnOne's Perfect Effects Dynamic Contrast I mentioned in case you are interested. http://player.vimeo.com/video/80435062?title=0&byline=0&portrait=0&autoplay=1

@squamloon Thank you, Jim. That means a lot!
January 7th, 2015
What a fascinating landscape. Reminds me a bit of an area of fossilized trees we saw in the Namib desert.
January 7th, 2015
@lyndemc Very well said, Denise.. it was indeed a graveyard. Thank you for your thoughtful comment.
