The fiesta continues

This is a part-built falla, when it's finished this one will be about 60 metres high! They build about 200 of these all over the city, once finished they are on display for four days and then the burn them all!! The skill, craftsmanship and amount of work that goes into them is incredible.
Such strong features he has. Great photo.

Great photo - I love all the textures, also. What are they built from?

@dmariewms Thank you, they are supposed to be made of wood as the festival originally started with the town's carpenters using up all their old bits of wood but now it's all much more elaborate and a lot of it is polystyrene and plastic!

Why do they burn them? What is the reason for the festival? It seems a shame to destroy such artistry!

@mainebrighteyes The festival started with the carpenters simply burning scrap wood at the end of winter ready for spring and gradually it grew into a competition of who could build the best 'falla' before they burn them all. It's still a competition and the one that wins doesn't get burnt - the rest are burnt during the night of 19th March! Then they start designing and building next year's!!! Some people are employed full time on this!
