I've always thought of this curious little building in my head as the Pepper Pot House, but apparently it's really called Bottle Lodge. Come to think of it, it does look more like a bottle and and frankly has none of the characteristics of a pepper shaker. Damn. I still think 'Pepper Pot House' has more charm to it though. I'm guessing that it was built in the late 18th century, or only slightly later.
Below is all the information that I've managed to uncover on the building.
BOTTLE LODGE - Grade II:-
This is a curious octagonal lodge in ashlar stone with an ogee stone vaulted roof. There is a central stone chimney, moulded stone eves, mullioned windows and a cambered stone doorway.
The building stands at the roadside opposite Tixall Farm, at the Tixall end of the bridleway connecting Tixall to Great Haywood, where the Astons and Cliffords held further land and property. Bottle Lodge was previously known as the Upper Lodge, with the Lower or White Lodge, at the Haywood Mill end of the Bridleway.
The chimney was straightened when the building was restored a few years ago for use as rented accommodation, with single rooms upstairs and downstairs. In the 19th century it was used to house the local shepherd with his children sleeping in the farmbuildings on the other side of the road.
This is so pretty & such a beautiful shape!! Can you imagine how you would start building that roof..so clever ! I can see a curtain so thought it must be liveable, it would be fun to rent for a holiday !! Thank you for the history ! For some reason I wasn't sure if you lived in UK or America !! Obviously here !!
@happypat Pat, I live in the UK, and Bekki lives in the USA (she was visiting here for several months earlier this year) Hopefully, I'll be going to see her in the states next as it's my turn to travel.
