Looking at this old bridge and its name plate, an odd thought popped into my head. Something inside me felt that in some ways it's as wrong to number bridges as it is to number people, especially old brick ones such as this one. It just appears so clinical. I know bridges are practical pieces of engineering and the number is just a map reference to make the recording of all the bridges in the area easier, yet they become more personal than that, they actually cross time and lives. Luckily, this bridge does have a name too, but many around here don't.
We should write each one's # down and name it. Let's see "Mable, Amelia, Lillie, Beatrice and Dehlia" for a start. That way even if it is only us each bridge gets christened and given the honor of being made personal. :)
I've never heard of numbering bridges before. They're way too special and significant to be just a number! They're so symbolic too. This one is mighty fine and I bet Roseford could tell many a story!
