With the recent purchase of National Geographic by 21st Century Fox and a substantial reduction in staff, many of my former colleagues left the building for the last time today... some had worked there over 40 years.
I worked there from 1975-2008 when it was the philosophy that the magazine would never appear on news stands (as it appears with this photo). Instead, you became a member of the Society and received the monthly magazine as part of membership.
Just hope this works out well for everybody and thinking of my former colleagues today.
A very famous publication Scott....an icon in fact. Why do institutions like this get bought by large companies who never follow the same pattern & always change things for the worse. Take Cadburys chocolate here as an example....they are messing with the fruit & nut bars now using sultanas instead of raisins! So sorry for your former colleagues, sounds like you were there at the best time.
Considering who bought it and how political he is, I think it will lose some of its trustworthiness as a neutral, scientific magazine. In addition to my worry about this, you have given additional information of long-time professionals losing their jobs too. :(
Another icon gone - that's sad. Certainly sad for the people they let go, but also sad for our society - National Geographic has always been such a fascinating well written (and the photos - ohh!) magazine. Can only hope - but not optimistic.
National Geographic had a beautiful campus in Rockville/Gaithersburg, I remember going there for their annual warehouse book sales back in the 1980s. Now, libraries won't even accept them for donation. By the way, nice focus for your pic.
