Warren - The medals are for all finishers. Usually just for the longer races like half marathons, but occasionally 10Ks and other races will have them.
If they were only for the fastest runners, I'd never have a medal. I have built up my endurance, but I've never been blessed with speed.
Race organizers are getting wise to the fact that medals attract participants. The Rock 'n' Roll series' motto is, and I'm not kidding here, "It's All About The Bling," and if you complete more than one of their races within a calendar year they'll send you bonus medals.
Trust me - when you complete that kind of a distance, you deserve a medal ;)
A marathon ins 26.2 miles. I just did one - New York City last November. It was an amazing experience, but training for it was an all-encompassing experience.
A half marathon is 13.1 miles. I've done six of them, and am planning on doing one last one in April. After that, I think I'll keep it to 10Ks or less (6.2 miles) - they don't take over my life the way that the longer races do.
I'm one and out with that, and it took me forever (6:12:20, which was still an hour faster than Al Roker....), but I'm really thrilled to have done it :)
Thank you ladies :)
