This is the registration plate of the tractor posted yesterday. This format of 3 letters and 3 numbers was used between 1930's and 1963. So we know the tractor is over 52 years old. The last 2 letters signified the City/Town/District of Registration. TT was Exeter (or Devonshire).
From 1963 onward we added a suffix letter to indicate the year. 1963 A, (ABC 123A), 1964 B etc.from 1967 the registration year ran from 1 Aug to 31 July. IOQZ were never used (Q is used for kit cars, rebuilds and cars of indeterminate age). In 1983 we started all over again in reverse that is to say A123 ABC. Then is Sept 2002 we changed it all again with a completely new system of aging... Maybe I'll bore you with that sometime
@lhart It's not just tractors all motorized (internal combustion and electric) vehicles in UK that are used on the public roads have to be registered, and subject to Ministry of Transport (MOT) Test. Most vehicles follow the system I outlined; Military and Diplomatic being notable exceptions.
