I heard this lighthouse had an interesting history and having missed it on my first trip, we made a determined effort to see it this time. We almost missed it again, but arrived just as the sun was setting. This lighthouse does have an amazing history - built on a different island in 1852, survived numerous hurricanes and the Civil War. The combined punch of Hurricanes Andrew and Opal seriously damaged the lighthouse. It was moved to St. George Island, where it was rebuilt brick by brick and reopened to the public in 2008. Here is a link to its history: http://www.stgeorgelight.org/index.cfm/m/16
When I first looked, Tina had just called that lunch was nearly ready! So I scanned the linked website. Now I've looked again and read it. What a marvellous effort by the community, first the rebuilding, then the total re-siting after the last hurricane damage. Really interesting history and current things! Thank you.
