Newcastle’s first windmill driven flourmill built in 1820 originally stood on this site. After it was demolished in 1850 the Obelisk was erected on the site of the original mill. It has been struck by lightning several times in its 165 year history.
@onewing@365anne Thanks for your lovely comments. @pyrrhula The obelisk was auctioned in 1847, it was purchased by a resident and set for demolition, when the shipping community raised a petition to Governor Sir Charles FitzRoy to retain the building as a marker for ships entering the port.
The crafty owner pushed ahead and the windmill was demolished before the Government could order its retention. The shipping community continued to lobby the Government and in 1850 the Obelisk was erected on the site of the original mill.
