An hour’s drive northeast of Uluru is Kings Canyon, in Watarrka National Park. This shot looks better on black.
There are two main walking trails in Kings Canyon: the easy, 2 km Kings Creek walk along the creek bed and the more challenging 6 km Kings Canyon Rim Walk. Be warned, I only made it to the end of the walk with the assistance of a fabulous ranger called Marty who helped me after succumbing to heat exhaustion. Could have been a very expensive chopper rescue.
The Rim Walk skirts the edge of Kings Canyon, allowing you to peer over sheer sandstone cliffs into the shadowy depths of the gorge 150 m below. There is a beautiful oasis called the Garden of Eden, which has a permanent waterhole and waterfalls (after winter rains).
I love this place. One of our most memorable holidays was to central Australia & doing the 6 km rim walk. Thankfully you were able to get back safely. Our son Martin was only 9 when we travelled there but he was like a mountain goat.
Great shot, as soon as I saw this I knew exactly where you were, I used to be tour guide out there, so I know every inch of this canyon. Glad you made it out safely.
