Part of the Crystal Palace and South London Junction Railway, built to serve visitors to the Crystal Palace after it moved to Sydenham in South London. The line was not a big success due to competition from rival train operators and low numbers of palace visitors. One of the few occasions attracting large passenger numbers was the 1936 fire that destroyed the palace - somewhat ironically, since the palace was never rebuilt and this sealed the fate of the little-used line. It finally closed in 1954. Crescent Wood Tunnel (also known as Upper Sydenham tunnel) is now a bat roost.
