@gigiflower Many major cities in the Netherlands with more then one station have a central station. The central stations have at least 40,000 daily passengers visiting. Utrecht central has 228,000 daily passengers and is the most frequented visited station of the Netherlands. Also it's the central hub of the Netherlands, so if something happens there, most likely it's felt everywhere in the Netherlands. @flyrobin Thank you, yes it was a nice grey evening with a bit of brightness from the train and the sky. :-)
@gigiflower yes, and they are now expanding the station (That's why there is a mess around the tracks) to be able to receive 100 million people per year.
@train365 Oh WOW.........I don't think any of our train stations in Australia would even get close to that number!! That's nearly 5 times our overall population!!!
@hermann it comes down to vision and condition. Because in the 70's the rail travel was declining as well. But instead of running less trains to handle the decreasing demand they started to run more trains at least every half hour. And because of the small scale of the country the demand picked up. Also because there was a large campaign to increase cycling from home to the station. For instance Utrecht Centraal when the station finished will have room for 12.500 bicycles.
