108 Queen Elizabeth Inspects The Horses

Her Majesty The Queen inspects the runners and riders in the parade ring during the 1988 Derby Day race meeting at Epsom Downs on Wednesday, 1st June.

Epsom Downs is a Grade 1 racecourse located in Epsom, Surrey, England which is used for thoroughbred horse racing.

Owned by the Jockey Club, Epsom has enjoyed a long association with the British Royal Family, with the Queen attending most years for the Derby.

The Derby is the United Kingdom's premier thoroughbred horse race for three-year-old colts and fillies, over a mile and a half.

The 209th running of the Derby was won by Kahyasi, ridden by Ray Cochrane and trained by Luca Cumani.

The pre-race favourite Red Glow finished fourth.

Epsom also hosts the Oaks Stakes for three-year-old fillies, and the Coronation Cup for horses aged four years and upwards.

All three races are Group 1 races and run over the same course and distance.
