119 In Memoriam - Ypres (Ieper)

A plaque in Ypres - in memoriam, for all citizens of Ypres, victims of wars 1914-1918 and 1939-1945.

In memoriam, alle burgers van of in Ieper, slachtoffers van de oorlogen 1914-1918 en 1939-1945.

The Belgian city of Ypres (Ieper) - affectionately called 'wipers' by soldiers in the British Expeditionary Force - suffered horrendous casualties during numerous battles in the surrounding area.

Although we often hear the term 'Battle of Ypres', there were at least five major battles in northern France and southern Belgium.

First Battle of Ypres (19th October to 22nd November, 1914) after the Race to The Sea.

Second Battle of Ypres (22nd April to 15th May, 1915) saw the first large-scale use of poison gas by the German army.

Third Battle of Ypres (31st July to 6th November, 1917), also known as the Battle of Passchendaele

Fourth Battle of Ypres (9th to 29th April, 1918) - also known as the Battle of Estaires or Battle of the Ly.

Fifth Battle of Ypres (28th September to 2nd October, 1918) - also known as the Advance of Flanders.
