I have heard it said so many times when people are sipping wine...'oh, that was a good year for (fill in blank with name of wine grape)" It really never made that much sense to me...UNTIL this year. I have table grapes, not wine grapes, but this year for the first time, I CAN tell the difference in the grapes from years past. I have 6 varieties growing...just a few plants of each. Here they are from left to right, Campbell, Flame, Lakemont, Concord, Glenora, Lakemont (I goofed and lined them up a second time) and Candis. Now, most people love the Concord, it is popular for making jelly, but to me, it was nothing compared to the larger ones, Campbell. But this year, I can't even eat the Campbells...maybe they need more time. The Flames are all covered with mildew, so the birds will get those. They are normally my favorites. The Lakemont (pictured twice) are good, but a tiny bit less sweet than usual. And really surprising for me are the Glenora...normally, I don't like them at all and this year, they are my second favorite!! My favorite this year are the Candis. So for the first time, I see what a difference the weather can make. We had a really mild winter a wet spring and then came the zero rainfall for the month of August and September. I have been picking and giving away gallon sized bags of them...today I picked all that was left (except for the ones I am letting the birds have) and now have a full laundry basket of them in my garage...ANY TAKERS???!!!
Lucky you, Vicki . . . I really enjoyed your commentary; it's really neat that you can tell the difference. I'm just amazed at the variety in the colors.
You really have that many varieties growing? Wow! You make your point well. I wish I could have a taste test with you!. Are you going to make jelly? This is a beautiful and informative shot!
You are now a certified conniosseur of grapes, Vicki! It must be fun to grow these and then get to taste and eat them when they're ready! Beautiful arrangement and colors .... and yes, I'm ready for some "leftovers!" Love grapes. :)
@lyno LOL...when we planted the grapes, my husband wrote the names on each row in the order they were planted...I had to look at the writing on the wall to remember which were which for posting this!
wonderful shot Vicki! And Quite the Wine Connasuer you are now!! If you ship them to P.A. they will make you some Wine Shine !!! lol! :p love the colors!
It must be so satisfying to know that you have produced these. They look so healthy, too. Congratulations and interesting what you had to say about the different taste to years past.
Thank you for you visit and nice comment. I really do appreciate it .
