Rushcliffe Country Park by vikdaddy

Rushcliffe Country Park

I brought my D-SLR with me to work today. A colleague is an experienced photographer, and he wanted to play with my ultra-wide angle lens as well as show me his filters and how they work. We went to the local park as it was a lovely day, and although there was nothing particularly exciting to photograph we took a few shots anyway.

As usual, in post-processing I decreased the exposure in the sky a little and increased it slightly for the water and surrounding features. I also increased the clarity and contrast.

It was helpful discussing filters today. I think I have a better grasp of how a filter set can improve my landscape shots and what types would be useful. I might try and purchase a second-hand set from eBay or something first though, because I don't want to make an expensive mistake.

Canon EOS 450D, f/9, 1/200, ISO-100
LOVE LOVE LOVE, fave!

Great shot Vik! I'm pretty niave on filters myself, except that I have a friend with a 10-stop nuetral density filter and he gets some great cloud blurring effects because of like 30 second daytime exposures with that. It can add alot of drama to a shot.

I'm curious what a more experianced person said about filters, any easy tips?

Yeah thanks for the info Vik, I really like the sounds a gradiated filter. That could really come in handy for those times the sky keeps washing out.

Another fantastic shot Vik! Congrats, you have really been knocking them out of the park lately. I love the reflection of that gorgeous sky in the water.

Hi Vik - cheers for your comments. Nope, have never switched to RAW mode, just plain old JPEG... As I don't have any editing software (just picasa which is free to download and quite limited) I hadn't thought it was worth it.. Although I might take some snaps and see how they come out.

Have also been looking at filters, magazines seem to rave on about them, so thought I might treat myself to something one day..

Nice pic btw... very peaceful looking place...

This is wonderful. I purchased 2 polarising filters from Argos for about £18, which apparantly help define the clouds and water reflection I believe. Although not Canon (type in camlink in argos) they fit my Canon 500D fine. Rather than spend loads I wanted a tester and also a protector for my actual Canon lens, cheaper to replace the filter than the lens in an accident.

Awesome shot! :D Glad you got to try something new. How do filters work? I know you can have colour filters, as well as bokeh-shape filters... did you use a filter in this shot?

Wonderful shot!! Wow!

What kind of filters are you looking into? About the only thing I have right now is a polarizing filter and a UV filter. I really want to get a neutral density filter for blocking out bright lights. I also want a star filter.

Out of those, I like the polarizing filter the best. Boy, what it can do to the color of the sky!

Re: polarizing-I have two of them. I bought one of mine from my teacher for a great price and the other one off of eBay.
