I was exhausted last night, so I slept really well. I woke up bright and breezy, and I was watching some TV after breakfast when a cat visited my garden. It wasn't the cat that frequents that I've photographed on day 23 and day 147; it was a ginger kitten that I hadn't seen before. It was friendly but a little hesitant, and really cute.
I like cats but I'm not in to them in a big way, but I really liked this little moggy. I did little in the way of editing. I took a few photos I liked; you can view the rest on my Flickr page ( http://www.flickr.com/photos/vikdaddy/). I have to mention that I named one of the photos 'crouching moggy ginger kitten'... Well I think it's funny!
I spent a few hours today editing my photos from last night. Shooting an event was a good experience, and having reflected on it I have learnt a few things. One is that you must scout the location prior or leave time to take a few initial experimental shots. I found that my photos improved as the night wore on as I learned to deal with the lighting and scenarios the event brought up. Another lesson learned is that a flash is vital, as is a decent mid-range zoom lens. It made me really want Canon's 17-55mm f/2.8 lens (but it's about £700!) Finally, I learnt that engaging with the guests really helps to bring out the best in people, and helps to capture 'the moments'.
It was really good experience, and although I did it for free I really relished it. The event organiser (who also happens to be my cousin) seems to like the photos, and may use some of them for promotional material and for the website. I'll be credited of course, so all in all yesterday's shoot was really productive and enjoyable.
Semi-professional photographer based in Nottingham, England, I shoot mainly events and weddings. I'll be posting my work using my Fujis - X100S and X-Pro1.

On a side note Vik, I recently opened an flickr account and I've checked yours. Whats your take on having all sizes available for download? I wanna disable this as I plan to up load my night work to it or I could just whack a bigger but faint water mark across it. But then it would spoil them. Just wondered what your take on it was as your a regular user and noticed yours are open for download, does this not bother you?
@azza_l Interesting point Aaron. I have seen a couple of my pics on other sites, but they were credited to me as they were links directly from Flickr and my profile name was attached. To be honest I haven't thought about it too much. I did my first event yesterday, and before they're used for promotional material and the like I have asked them to let me know, as I will first add an additional watermark that'll include copyright info and an email and flickr address (I have lots of photos from the night that I haven't posted on Flickr).
You have to ask yourself, are you doing your photos for financial gain? I'm not (yet), but if/when I do a shoot for said purposes I will certainly be more stringent with those photos and add the additional information. Remember, there are lots of pros on the site who either include very little or no watermark, possibly because they have the copyright information described with each photo on the Flickr site itself.
You could reduce the file size though so the optimal size of the image is when viewed on Flickr, and if it's any larger then it wouldn't be decent quality anyway, if it concerns you?
@vikdaddy ok thanks Vik, i will look in to may be resizing them. I'm not gaining money from them but yea like everyone else i would like too, not that i think i'm some pro but few people have mentioned i should consider trying to sell some of my light painting or night shots, get them printed on canvas and sell at arts and craft type fairs. Its all a pipe dream at the moment and thought i would start with flickr first to get my work out there , hence concerns i guess. For all i know no one might not want to steal my work at all anyway haha. Anyway cheers
@azza_l Pipe dreams... I'm having the same thoughts and discussions! Another thing is that perhaps it's worth adding your watermark to a dead space in your photograph, so it might be in the middle somewhere instead of at the bottom left or right. That way it doesn't detract too much from the image but if anybody tries to lift it then it would be a lot more difficult to do so without at least crediting you.
Add me on Flickr by the way and I'll reciprocate :)
@vikdaddy thats not a bad shout actually, use a bigger dead part of the picture. A small signature in the corner can easily be cropped off if someone were get a copy of it (does'nt take a genius to print screeen and paste in to some software)
I'll add you soon when I upload all my work and get this signature thing sorted. Cheers
Cute cat. I like them much, so this photo is even better to me. :)
And congrats on your event shooting. Have you considered Tamron 17-55 f2.8? It's much cheaper and I haven't heard a bad word about it...
Like the way his bottom lip seams to be quivering like he's so hard done by, nice capture Vik, I'm with you on the Flickr thing, moving the watermark about at this stage will probably suffice
awww cute little thing i think hes got a swollen lip mine had one like that once when he put his nose into something and it bit him on the lip ...it got better tho poor little thing lot to learn
