During our tramp last week, we discussed Forster’s four characteristics of humanism. We all agreed with curiosity, a free mind, and belief in the human race, but we stuck with “belief in good taste”. How and who to define the good taste?
Did you spot my cat – she would like to join the discussion. I bet she thinks the plastic spoon is a bad taste.
love the relfections in the shiny spoons, that could be a shot in itself. Have no ideas about the four characteristics of humanism though, you are a deep thinker
Okay, I'm game to comment.... good taste is not defined in my book by what a person owns, how they dress or what they eat. Good taste is deep inside of a person, it's how they compose themselves. It is the kindness and respect that they give to others. It is the manner of agreeing to disagree; with love and respect of another's beliefs. It is being humble and truthful with grace. :-) I wouldn't think twice about eating with that plastic red spoon or seeing someone else eat with it and I would never think that they didn't have "good taste". It's all in the make up of each person as to if they have good taste or not. Sometimes, someone who has everything (material wealth) has very little good taste. They actually come off as outrageous, flamboyant, gaudy, crudely showy and sometimes down right sleazy. Wealth does not provide good taste.
Kitty has a paw up on this one! I am not familiar with Forster, and I don't know if I'd agree with his assessment of humanism either. However, it is getting close to my bedtime and my brain is a bit foggy- night time is not the right time for me to have a philosophical discussion!
"how and who to define good taste?"...an interesting question juxtaposed with humanism. If memory serves, Protagoras stated that "man is the measure of all things". I always interpreted that as as meaning elemental truths are only elemental truths if an individual deems it to be such....is there anything more humanistic that that?....
@ianrm My gosh, you definitely does not have a headache this time. "Man" is the measure ...? Not "Woman"? haha, Cannot help. Thank you for your inside.
I've been looking for kitty in the reflection. DUH! There's his paw as plain as day! Love the conversation you started and if it weren't almost 1 a.m., I'd try to respond.
Couldn't stop myself from commenting! I liked the set of objects and wanted to say that today I made a picture of some cutlery too! That's just implements how I miss you guys. I think that Forster’s fourth characteristic of humanism is wrong, just like that! Who would argue with me if my opinion is a reflection of my taste! haha! I love reflections of the sky! That's the masterpiece!
@yaorenliu Do you mean me being an astronaut? ;) I'm just very busy and will be back in a week... But I missed the project so much that I couldn't help but left the comment. :)
The paw adds drama to this photo. One swipe and there goes the careful composition. Mine is presently clawing at the bedroom door -- do I remain cozy and warm as I happily peruse recent posts on 365 or get up to let the little brat in?

Provoking thoughts, Yao! You are really good at this! I do like the composition and the thinking behind it! I won't comment further because taste is rather subjective!
