Our neighbor and great friend not only tends a beautiful garden, http://365project.org/Weezilou/365/2010-07-09 he is a superb cook. When I wanted to serve Deviled Eggs as a part of my luncheon meal, I sent the boiled eggs to him as I knew he’d decorate them beautifully. He cultivates blossoms and herbs to use in his cooking and these borage blossoms are a colourful treat when they’re available. He always refers to the quote above, so I thought I’d look that up to see what else it might imply. I found the following:
“This beautiful plant is said to bring courage to the heart and drive away all sadness. Fresh borage flowers and leaves have been used in wines and salads since ancient times. Women of the Victorian era used borage in claret cups to raise the spirits and lift one’s mood.”
I was left to wonder if it might have been more about the claret than those lovely blossoms, but they might seem a good excuse! These were, however, commented upon as they elevated the appearance of the always-delicious-however-ordinary Deviled Egg.
