Do you remember this show? Truly, *this* is the Willoughby Rod Serling wrote about, a step out of time, and, sitting alongside the railroad tracks, just 20 paces from where Ron @stray_shooter is taking this photo of an antique trunk. The car doesn't honk, Ron doesn't jump out of the way, everything moves slowly for there's atmosphere to be absorbed and too much you wouldn't want to overlook!
The closing narration from that episode in 1960 describes that district in San Juan Capistrano pretty well...
"Willoughby? Maybe it's wishful thinking nestled in a hidden part of a man's mind, or maybe it's the last stop in the vast design of things - or perhaps, for a man..., who climbed on a world that went by too fast, it's a place around the bend where he could jump off. Willoughby? Whatever it is, it comes with sunlight and serenity, and is a part of The Twilight Zone."
I just read an article in the NYTimes about the lack of satisfaction in most people's work http://tinyurl.com/jwb9esy Sounds like there are many people in the world who would like to jump off.
This is like you taking a picture of me taking a picture of you...love it!! It's great to see someone getting down and into a shot, caring not about a cars or others around. Excellent shot! I remember the Twilight Zone but not a lot of the details. Interesting.
@dgrynn ... the Twilight Zone but not a lot of the details... That's because you're *young", Deb! Rejoice! You're not "old" like Richard and me @chard ...he's a bit of a cut up, so I'm not sure if he believed me when I said "...THIS was Willoughby"... "Back in the day", Richard, I suspect all those shows were made on a sound stage or back lot... but this place had all the atmosphere of that location as described in the show.
@allie912 A very interesting article... noted the sentence "Demand for our time is increasingly exceeding our capacity..." they got that right...and I don't even have "a job" to go to! As it is, I'm going to have to finish the rest of the article later as we're off to the dentist... but while I was trying to cut/paste that sentence (which it wouldn't let me do :( I saw another article of interest, "What we lose when handwriting fades..." Life's a bit of a whirlwind... We all now live within a library and there's not enough time to read it all!!! Thanks for stopping by!
@allie912 Oh my crazy brain...the things it comes up with sometimes... as I reread the note I just left you, in popped another Twilight Zone story about the man who only dreams of being left alone to read... do you remember that one, and the conclusion? One of the most-painful-to-consider stories they showed, I think... Ahhh...the man's name was Mr Beemis...that just came to me also... (and if you that that makes me a television junkie, I haven't turned it on...or anything...since last August...and feeling quite good to have that one item crossed off my "to do" list!)
Often have a nice conversation/talk with a car driver that can`t pass because the road is small and I was taken pic.`s. Not every one is in a hurry. If you are willing to listen they tell there story and we both have a short moment of happiness
@Weezilou What exactly do you mean when you wrote, "I haven't turned it on...or anything...since last August." No TV and what else? I have often thought that if I were to give up anything for Lent, it wouldn't be chocolate or wine but television if I really intended it to be a scrifice!
@allie912 A year ago when we arrived in Lunenburg, we were considering getting a tv for the living room so we'd have a comfortable place to sit and watch...but I hate a living room to be used for anything but conversation. We have a tv in the bedroom, but it's uncomfortable to lay in bed to watch...and the news was always tragic and I was running out of the time I needed everyday, so I told Ken I was turning it off...done, over & out. He watched a little, but I never joined him. Back in CA, we'd both all but given it up, so we didn't get the DVR box. In all this time I watched the first new Downton Abbey. I miss that series, Mad Men...that's about it. We were news junkies, too...much that I hear is via 365 or from Ken & if necessary, I'll google a news story. I'm calmer, still on overload, but I know I'm accomplishing everything possible in a day. Did see those two movies I told you about...time well-spent... I've already gathered a group of friends to go to a musical the first weekend we arrive in NS...give me the social life and a circle of friends...it took me a lot of years to discover that's plenty enough to fill the day! ...glad you found the "Time Enough" story... little wonder I never shook that one off!
Well, I had no idea that you took this photo, and I certainly wasn't aware of the car about to run me down! I am a fan of the Twilight Zone, but I only remember a few of the episodes, but reading the Wikipedia summary, I have to agree with your theory! I guess I have to post the photo that I took now. It's coming tomorrow. I reached my three photos/day limit already today. It'll be worth the wait. Thanks for making me famous, Louise!
@stray_shooter Is this not a million miles-and-a wold-away from the freeway just down the road, especially considering how long we sat in stop-and-go traffic to get there! I had so many good photo choices just from the brief time we spent there together, but it seemed right to share "The Meet-Up" Photo ;)
I would have to agree with Mr. Bemis. It isn't fair.
