I took this while walking the dogs today. The weather was a bit naff so we took a short cut and passed these trees.
I was amazed at the complex pattern that the roots/trunks had made.
Very fascinating Bulldog, I guess it's all one and the same plant that maybe had some trauma when it was young and resprouted at several different points. The trunks and roots look fused. It's an amazing find and great for the word of the day!
@tishpics - I am not sure that it is diseased as there are very similar ones further round the track? It is almost like historically they were planted as borders to the fields?
@gphelps5 No, I wasn't thinking of disease, more like the branches lopped off, could have been accident but if others have it then deliberate. I think it could have been an attempt at hedge-laying where the young upright branch gets pegged down horizontally and then lots of shoots grow up vertically to make a good thick hedge. Whatever, it's interesting to look at and photograph.
Thank you all so much for your comments and questions. As I mentioned earlier, there are very similar ones further round the track and Mrs Bulldog thinks that they may have originally been hedge-laying in the way you said Pat but over the little saps have grown to bi bigger trees.
I will try and take some more shots when it is next light enoungh, it may be a couple of weeks as I am off to Scotlandshire this weekend.
@roachling - They are strange, but the stranges thing is that no-one knows what they are? I have posted other photos of plants before and there are useally a few that can name them.
@ladyjane - It's great to have a good imagination, I am glad this shot has triggered it off for so many people.
I wondered what they were but it's hard to tell from the photo as I can't see the leaves clearly. If it started out as hedge it would be a hedgerow tree like beech, hazel, oak or hawthorn perhaps but I don't think the leaves look right for those from what I can see. Hornbeam maybe?

@maggiemae - I have no idea either Maggie, they almost look diseased but I am sure they are not?
@jackie8 - I like to show that I can do proper growd up photos as well Jackie.
@mittens - Thanks Marilyn
