I struggle with anything called Abstract Photography because I really don't know what it is--which is weird because I know when I see abstract art--just not abstract photography. I cannot tell you how confused I got after the Mundane Object Challenge had the Abstract Mundane Challenge added--because each time I looked at the entries, I'm thinking, well, those are the object and I can tell it's the object, so why is it "abstract?" If anyone knows a good way to explain it to me, I'd love it. I did look online and saw many things that were symmetrical or had patterns and designs, but I guess the word "abstract" just does not hit me! I've even had people comment on some of my photos and say "great abstract" but I'm thinking, hmmmm, how? I'm hoping this creature in my garden is abstract! :)
There's still time to get in on this most awesome and fun challenge!
here is a description with some examples that may help you , Daryl. http://photo.tutsplus.com/articles/inspiration/70-stunning-abstract-photographs/ I know it can be confusing at times but it generally seems to be a portion of an object that leaves you wondering exactly what is it. This is a lovely shot with great color.
This is beautiful, Daryl. Love the colors and jumble of "tentacles". I had the same question about abstract photography... the link was very helpful. Thank you, Katy. @grammyn
This is so gorgeous! I would not say "abstract" in that I would immediately say "it is a flower." I think this is one I have done that is abstract. It WAS a white fluffy seed that landed on purple butterfly bush flowers.... http://365project.org/espyetta/365/2012-09-17
@grammyn Thanks so much Katy! Sorry, I have been out for the past two days--no commenting, but I did read your article as soon as you sent it. I'm still confused, but it's more informed confusion and happy confusion--you were so kind to send that to me! I think my silo shot the next day was more abstract than this one. :) Who knows!! :)

This shot, abstract or not--that is the question, apparently made it to the PP--wow! Thanks so much for your encouragement and special thanks to @grammyn Katy for some more info on abstract photography! I'm looking at all the photos. Just exhausted from the days of summer. That's a good thing. I'll be better at responding in the fall when I'm properly employed and stuck at the computer all day long. Sigh. :)
@darylo Generally for me it is abstract if the object is so close up or only partially shot that you can't tell what it is until someone tells you and then you can see it. Sometimes that can be achieved by being so out of focus that you can't tell too.
Wow! Daryl, Congrats on the PP!
My take on abstract is , you experience it, it comes to you, its an expression, its subtle... you don't catch it, it catches you... it speaks sans words... and conveys a million things and each one interprets it as per their view...
Hope I've not added to the confusion! Lol!
;-)
@amrita21 I think of that in art, but with photography, and from what I read, that is not as evident--not that it isn't, it's just when the mundane challenge went "abstract" and I saw the entries for abstract, I thought, hmmm, is that abstract? I'm overthinking it. :)
