After the "Die-In" by darylo

After the "Die-In"

The NRA came to town; so did Donald Trump. So I went to work, left with camera, headed to the MARTA station, and decided to put on my Photojournalism hat to record a citizen "Die-In"--a silent protest that involved participants lying down on the grass of Woodruff Park still for 16 minutes (the time a person is killed in the US by gunfire is every 16 minutes according to the organizers). I went to find my mom, one of the ones who planned to be "one of the dead." It was interesting, and lots of photographers/videographers like me there to record what was going on. I find photojournalism a natural extension of my work--I like observing. Here they are: https://365project.org/darylo/album4/2017-04-28

Life was just "going on as usual" around all of this. In fact, when I arrived out of the MARTA station, to walk to the rest of the way, I thought to myself "did I get the right day?"

This shot is after the protest, after I located my dead (no very alive mother), and after a nice lunch at the Landmark Diner downtown with Mom's co-dead conspirator--they are both in their 80's by the way.
Superb shot and processing - and good on the protestors, I like their style

great shot -
I'm stunned by how easy it is to own and use a gun in the U. And across the other side of the world i'm guessing we only hear about the high profile events.... peace people

@brigette It is amazingly easy and it's amazingly easy to get shot. Both my brothers have been held up by guns (one multiple times), my aunt's brother's wife was brutally murdered by guns after a brutal rape, and my father was hit by "friendly fire" during a hunting outing. I'm trained to use a gun; I'll never pick one up again. The USA has a fixation with a Constitution that provides every excuse in the book for its "Rights" and while I agree those rights should be there, I have actual common sense. And now I'll get off my stupid soap box. :)

@darylo i hear you! And gosh what you have been through.. i am very sorry to hear that. Agreed rights are essential.. but things are way out of hand now. I hope the protest does not fall on deaf ears... take care

Such an interesting image with absooutely NO people in it. How unusual.

I thought of you today whne I heard Trump was there and wondered how you were involved and actually looked for you on the news

Wonderful light and converging lines. Such a clever and meaningful description, too. Glad you could enjoy a lunch with your mom, a newly initiated member of the "un-dead." :)

@rosiekerr I can't wait to tell her she should now apply for an "un-dead" role in season 8 of Walking Dead! Ha. :)

@grammyn Oh LAWD, I avoid the news! I just try to make my photo ninja moves, enter the scene, and then leave without a trace. :)

Perfect image!!

I would have joined the protest - I have strong feelings about the American gun culture, the ease of purchasing and owning a gun and the fact that little is done to stop it
