My dad and my friend both separately told me that they find this image disturbing, which I found surprising - it's only trees reflected in water after all! What does anyone else think?
I don't get disturbing from this at all - and disturbing is one of my favorite photographic subjects, so I know disturbing. :) It's most def cool, though!
No, it's not disturbing to me, but that's the interesting thing about art and the perspective of the viewer- it's subject to change depending on who's doing the viewing!
As a photographer, no I see the beauty.
I get how they see it as disturbing though. It is the fairy tale scary movie thing. The picture shows good movement and stretched out trees. That equals scary enchanted forest.
Lol, I didn't find it disturbing in a bad way, just gave me a funny feeling to look at it. Maybe it was the dizzy feeling mentioned by Paul Godfrey or maybe it is just the rippling movement playing tricks with my mind. Whatever it was it is strange that both I and your Dad both felt 'something' when looking at it. Ann H. LeFerve is right with what she says about the perspective of the viewer. Great discussion thread Laura.
It reminds me of Arthur Rackam's slightly scary, beautiful illustrations for fairy tales, the same expressives twists of line which give the drawings an out of this world feeling.
no... it's a bit eerie... and like someone else said, remniscent of something out of a fairytale... but not "disturbing"... to me, "disturbing" is a value-laden word that goes beyond expressing the feeling of an image... my litmus test is this: if an image is "disturbing", one should think twice before showing it to one of my boys... if an image is merely creepy, spooky or eerie, i would definitely show it to them because i'm sure they'd get a kick out of it...
@catwoman2 I know exactly what you mean about Arthur Rackham's illustrations and the stories were quite scary - I wonder whether that is what it made my dad think of, as he would have read them too!
As Laura's Dad may I explain why I said I found the photo "disturbing"?
First I like the photo!
When you see an image for the first time the brain tries to classify it in the first few seconds.
I see Laura's photo and by brain says
It's trees - but NO it can't be trees as the image wiggles.
So are these thing roots then - but no it's a reflection
But NO AGAIN as a reflection would be the other way up.

somebody hold me.
kidding... this is a disturbingly wicked awesome shot!
A cross between van Gogh and Edvard Munch. : )
Lol!! Thanks everybody! Not disturbing after all... phew (I wasn't aiming for disturbing so that's good!) :)

@lauralatham , I think it's great!
@kimcrisp did you read those too?
Very nice Laura! (No it isn't disturbing!)

So my brain gets confused or "disturbed"
Another thing that does this the the brain is the line drawings of M C Escher and the link below should take you to one.

Confusing to the eyes. I find a lot of HDR shots disturbing to the brain as they seem to focus on everything at once!
