So i took some shots of my friends newborn the other day, The bub was quite unsettled so we didnt get many nice pics of her asleep.
My mum saw this photo and said that she hates it because it looks like the baby has a massive head, she said it looks 'alien', i told her it probalby wasn't the most flattering pose of her but all babies have big heads and im not really into covering them up with the beanies ect and that this was the only sleeping shot we got of her so i wanted to include it.
what do you think of the editing? Her skin was very plethoric so i have taken some of the red out of it and cloned out a few little scratches but nothing major, i prefer to have the skin look natural instead of over the top edited. Ive also softened the blanket she was lying on as i felt it was very over powering, im unsure if i like that though or if i went over the top.
What do you think, hate it?
ohh and i havent been around much although ive still been tkaing photos, ive just been so busy i havent had time to comment or upload, eventually ill get through them all!
Well if that s the baby that's the baby........colours are lovely. But I have to say I've seen ones with gorgeous hats and they look very cute, maybe next time ?
@chantal yes ive got a few hats and we were going to put one on her but she woke up, i try and get shots with out the hats first as i find that the hats really age the photo
I think it's a very nice photo, and I especially like how far you have softened the blanket. It's still there, and it still has shape, but the lack of detail there brings the focus right back to the baby.
beautiful baby...God made each and everyone of us Unique...She is Beautiful...love her sleeping and the blanket looks so cozy ..i wouldnt change a thing!
I think the skin looks good and I agree that the head is fine since she is a baby and they have elongated heads! To me the blanket should be a bit more white, but overall a great shot and good editing. I love the pose and the lighting as well.
@agima im pretty sure its how ive posed her, the little rascal kept moving! couldnt pose her exactly how i wanted her which was with her other hand also visible and her more on her side.
thankyou everyone, this shot got hardly any comments on FB so i wasnt sure if it wasnt a nice pic or what!
this is the other shot from the day, this one got a rediculous amount of commments and likes on FB, but i kinda like the other one better.
Your editing is amazing, I would never have guessed! Her skin looks just right in the first one. The second one is lovely too :) well done and congrats to your friend!
i love that it is quite natural!:) people are not glossy dolls, and what the use for parents to look at a beautiful glossy child, beautiful as a shot, but with a very few resemblance to their own beloved child (or self-portraits). This shots are pretty as they are!:)
The thing that puts me off the first photo is the fold, otherwise it is lovely. I would maybe up the exposure and I think it would look great in B&W. I love the second shot too, so cute!
How could you not love them both! I have some ideas up my sleeve for when my grandchild arrives. I love the way in the second shot her foot keeps her dignified. The photographs seemed to instill a sense of relaxation in me as I looked at them as the baby comes accross as so serine. Colours, tones and design are beautiful.
I can't say the first photo is really pleasing on the eye. Newborns aren't always the most attractive creatures and I would want a portrait to be flattering - I think your second photo disguises the worst of the elongated head and is far more pleasing on the eye. Sometimes as parents we don't want to see warts and all - we want a photo that will just look good on a wall!
I prefer the first one. I think you did a great job on editing. The second she doesnt look very comfortable and her expression isnt so sweet. Beautiful baby and the first one is asking for a cuddle.
The second one is sooooo much better. For me the thing with the folded chin in the first photo totally wrecks it.
I would suggest most people didnt comment on it as they didnt want to point it out. Or maybe its just me... he he he
The pose in the first one also looks lifeless/flat for my liking. It would be great if you could see the fingers in the second one. Everybody love little fingers and toes... :)
I think both are very sweet, although I think the first one may have looked better from a different angle, taken from the right so that you don't get the full head in. and the cheek unfolded too ; )
I prefer the first one, I think. I would probably have brightened it up a bit though. It might work nicely if you really blow it out and go high key. I think the pose is pretty cool too.
Well, babies tend to look a bit alienish anyway but that is the nature of them. If you were worried aobut the color tone, did you think of going with black and white and upping the exposure a bit. But in the end it does not matter what I think, but more the momma.
I love the first photo - it is gently realistic in that a babies head is far greater proportionately than a toddlers or older child, - I love the 'wrinkle' it's so natural and it brought back memories of picking up a baby from her sleep and seeing the imprint of where she'd been lying and the whole beautiful fragility of a newborn. The color tone is soft and natural - both the photo's are lovely without any greeting card 'schmaltzyness' Awesome captures both of them.
I agree with kittikat ! must say I was a little confused reading through previous comments about the fold in the chin ? What fold - went back to look and laughed out loud . To me, who sees newborns everyday it was obvious that the little old persons jowl is squished cutely up against the chin :-) Now I cant see anything but a fold !
I am by no means an expert ! my opinion is yes it does seem to have a big head but it does in the other shot too! some babies just have large heads.I personally prefer your sleep shot the blanket looks great softened and I think you processed just enough. As a parent I would love both shots as a photographer the sleep shot gets my vote but they are both beautiful and you have a real talent.
I like them both, but the top one is better for me. I agree with comments up there about how the facial expression is sweeter and more content on top shot...so much so, that I did not even look at the elongated head. Just at that adorable face, then that sweet chubby baby body. I think that top photo is great!
I'm Guessing that in the first shot it was a natural delivery witch can give a elongated head however both shots do look natural and likeable and both Parents should be justifiable proud. Not quite a new born but this is a picture of mine a few days old.
Personally, it does not matter what we think. We are not your clients. The editing looks good and natural. Both of them are good enough to be presented to your clients.
I like them both. She's an infant. My daughter had a head the size of a VW when she was born. It's all those brains. What can we do if we have overly-smart daughters? Not hide them under a bushel! If I were her mother, I would love having this photo of such a soft precious daughter.
Personally I prefer the first one. Yes the head looks less elongated in the second shot but for me it lacks dignity.
Enjoy taking photos of your beautiful daughter! :)
i actually like the second one better...looks so cute all bunched up in that basket...and i like the texture against the soft baby skin....but the skin tone and blanket and all look great on the first one. To me (humble non-professional opinion), the way you have the baby positioned in the first one is awkward....and that's why i don't like it as much.
I like the second one much better, it looks much more natural and warmer in a way. Someone in the comments above mentioned that the first picture might look better in black and white, and I also think you should try that!
@sarahricho I have a 2012 calendar of baby shots by Anne Geddes, here is the link www.annegeddes.com/category/gallery/dig-gallery/ you might find some ideas!!!
I like the pictures. Never let anyone to tell you they hate something they probably don't know how to do better. It happens to me with drawing. My parents can't paint or draw, but judge very negatively sometimes just because they don't know anything about it, however, other people who understand what I'm doing make very positive comments.
Of course everything can be improved, but the word "hate" it's just a little strong. I like your picture, keep working on it and you'll get better ones.
I love photo's of all children, especially babies. I do agree with your Mom, I think it has to do with the way the baby is laying. I also wouldn't use the word, Hate, ever on anything that someone has done. I think you did the skin perfect, along with the blanket. I'm sure you will be able to get a better picture and it's true all babies head's are born larger than their bodies. The bodies have to grow into them. Keep shooting that beautiful baby.
I like the first one too - I think the editing looks very natural and it's nice and discreet on the nakedness - now I have teenagers I'm more conscious of that as they would absolutely FORBID public display of baby shots like the second one if that were them even though it is lovely!
I'm super picky about newborn photos. The first photo is under exposed. The angle is not flattering and the white blanket is grey and shadowy. and if you look along the babies back and down to her rear, you've got dark shadowing all along the top of the skin. I agree with Brandon on the folded skin as well.
I think it's a nice attempt and you are headed in the right direction.
I think her skin looks very good you did a great job.. but there's something about this photo that's just odd to me..? Not trying to be rude and I am not even close to being an expert! I don't know maybe it isn't bright enough or the colors..? I love the second one you posted though. The lighting is perfect!
i was trying to keep it in colour as i find that i often try to hide photos that just arent right by turning them black and white but i find that the black and white improves the colour of the blanket which was supposed to be cream but ended up a grey kind of colour!
@jenp thankyou for your advice, how would you get rid of the dark shadow along her back? i only use natural lighting for newborns i shoot (which isn't many!) this was taken in front of a window with a small window on the side where her head is.
@zshadowwalker would you believe she was a caeserean? she actually has a perfectly round head its just really really big! your bubby is very cute!
To me it looks like her cheek is rolled in on the weight of her head and created a fold.
the skin looks good.

I have now edited the shot into black and white and i like it much better

Its interesting how switching to black and white works so well for some shots.
