Today I was wandering around with my camera, looking for some opportunities to take a few photos. I stumbled on the second half of a football (rugby league, to you British-types) at West End, Brisbane.
I snapped about +100 photos and have managed to get down to the top 6.
This is where YOU come in! Help me pick the best photo of the day. I've numbered the photos, so put in a vote. Which ever has the most votes in 24 hours will be ElliotWB's "365 Photo of the Day"!
1) The Palm Off
2) The Look of Determination
3) Break Away
4) The Tackle
5) Team Kick
6) Spear Tackle
By the way - I see a lot of discussion threads about people lacking some inspiration or ideas. Head down to your local sports field on a Saturday or Sunday, set your shutter speed to fast and start snapping!
#6 is split-second timing and so for me the winner. The other shots you will get as often as you like, or very similar, the chances of getting a shot like this again are very slim.
@jdonnelly Good point Joseph. I hope I don't get a chance to photograph that too often. I originally wanted to give it an honest, almost journalistic, feel, but I am thinking now I should have given it the same post-processing treatment as no. 1. Thoughts?
@thebluegnu thanks for the constructive criticism. Was thinking the same myself.
That said, it looks like a two horse race between 1 and 6... Do you have a preference between the two?
#6 is nice. But I would really love to see photo #2 with a closer crop which would bring more attention to the expression on his face. I did not look at the players face until I read the title, and then it became my favorite photo after I buffered out the upper right corner of the photo.
@elliotwb
I think number one - as it's the most simple - captures the pace, determination, excitement and the physical-ness of the sport in a brief 2-man action shot - it says it all.
Number six - if you removed the man on the far right - it would simplify it a tad but the 'movement' itself is a little static compared to number one.
So my choice - at a push and a shove - #1 !!!
Love rugby! I have 2 boys that play. One just returned from a National 7's camp. I like #1 the best. I do find your photos a little under exposed. You are losing the details in the black areas. What exposure were you using? If you are using a high shutter speed to stop action, open the aperture up more. Great colour in all the shots.
I think I agree with most people. 1 & 6. 1 is clean and simple and shows the action and power of the game, And 6 is just such unusual shot, great timing. I Agree with Elliot, loose the guy on thew right and it would be even better.
I agree with your comments, just get to a local game and start snapping, such good fun.
Thank you all so very much for taking the time to let me know what you think of the pictures. You were all very kind and i really appreciated the constructive criticism and feedback.
I made some of the recommended changes - specifically "de-cluttering" the image, by cropping and photoshopping the player out of the right hand side of the image. The final version can be found here:
I love 1 - it has a simple composition but shows the action well. Some of the others are too confusing to see what's going on. Number 6 is really funny, too, tough.
Isn't #6 illegal?
all are great photos though

Ok...read through the replies..as some mentioned #6 is a great rare capture..so #6

Love all of them, though. I would love to watch a match in person! Looks really cool!

And the winner is... (drumroll, please)...
SPEAR TACKLE!
