Help me pick my "Photo of the Day"...

March 26th, 2011
Today I was wandering around with my camera, looking for some opportunities to take a few photos. I stumbled on the second half of a football (rugby league, to you British-types) at West End, Brisbane.
I snapped about +100 photos and have managed to get down to the top 6.

This is where YOU come in! Help me pick the best photo of the day. I've numbered the photos, so put in a vote. Which ever has the most votes in 24 hours will be ElliotWB's "365 Photo of the Day"!

1) The Palm Off

2) The Look of Determination

3) Break Away

4) The Tackle

5) Team Kick

6) Spear Tackle

By the way - I see a lot of discussion threads about people lacking some inspiration or ideas. Head down to your local sports field on a Saturday or Sunday, set your shutter speed to fast and start snapping!

Thanks for your criticism, input and help!

#1 "give me high five"

Isn't #6 illegal?

@rogerprice Totally illegal - and the guys didn't even get sent off!

As bad as it is.. I like number 6 :)
March 26th, 2011
Not your photo.. i meant the spear tackle...ha ha :)
March 26th, 2011
I like 1 and 6 but I prefer 6 more. Great capture of a particular split- of- a- second moment.. :-)

March 26th, 2011
#6 is split-second timing and so for me the winner. The other shots you will get as often as you like, or very similar, the chances of getting a shot like this again are very slim.
March 26th, 2011
@gavincci i don't think high-fiving with your face counts...

@jdonnelly Good point Joseph. I hope I don't get a chance to photograph that too often. I originally wanted to give it an honest, almost journalistic, feel, but I am thinking now I should have given it the same post-processing treatment as no. 1. Thoughts?

6!

all are great photos though
March 26th, 2011
1 or 6....the others are too busy or too complicated.
March 26th, 2011
@thebluegnu thanks for the constructive criticism. Was thinking the same myself.
That said, it looks like a two horse race between 1 and 6... Do you have a preference between the two?
March 26th, 2011
@suzk Thabks Suz. You can see why I had trouble picking just one!
March 26th, 2011
6 that is just crazy!!
March 26th, 2011

March 26th, 2011
1 was the instant fave but then I saw 6........it was hilarious!
March 26th, 2011
I would say 6 too! I also love six because it's funny!! Great capture!!!
March 26th, 2011
1 or 6 are the most interesting.
March 26th, 2011
I love #6 - it is just an amazing capture. They are all really good though, the colors in the uniforms make them all for me!
March 26th, 2011
I like numbers 1 and 6
March 26th, 2011
#1 and # 6...sorry...both are great

Ok...read through the replies..as some mentioned #6 is a great rare capture..so #6
March 26th, 2011
# 1 :)
March 26th, 2011
#6 is nice. But I would really love to see photo #2 with a closer crop which would bring more attention to the expression on his face. I did not look at the players face until I read the title, and then it became my favorite photo after I buffered out the upper right corner of the photo.

the last one
March 26th, 2011
@elliotwb
I think number one - as it's the most simple - captures the pace, determination, excitement and the physical-ness of the sport in a brief 2-man action shot - it says it all.
Number six - if you removed the man on the far right - it would simplify it a tad but the 'movement' itself is a little static compared to number one.
So my choice - at a push and a shove - #1 !!!
March 26th, 2011
Three and Five appeal to me the most, photographically.
March 26th, 2011
either number #1 or #6 .... #6 made me laugh out loud.
March 26th, 2011
5, or 6
March 26th, 2011
I'm with almost everyone else #6 for me, though I like #1 as well, these two tell a story, for me the others have too much going on!
March 26th, 2011
Love rugby! I have 2 boys that play. One just returned from a National 7's camp. I like #1 the best. I do find your photos a little under exposed. You are losing the details in the black areas. What exposure were you using? If you are using a high shutter speed to stop action, open the aperture up more. Great colour in all the shots.
March 26th, 2011
3 because to me it shows action.
March 26th, 2011
For me it's #3 or #6, but #6 is the winner just for the "in the moment" factor!
March 26th, 2011
these are great, but I really really like #1, so interesting!
March 26th, 2011
I like 1 best
March 26th, 2011
love number 5
March 27th, 2011
I was initially going to say #1 until I saw #6! Now torn between 1&6!
March 27th, 2011
I like #1: the palm off!
March 27th, 2011
6 is crazy good! Kudos to the dude on his head!!
March 27th, 2011
I can see why you've had a tough time picking! I can't decide between 1, 3, or 6!
March 27th, 2011
6

Love all of them, though. I would love to watch a match in person! Looks really cool!
March 27th, 2011
I like both 1 & 6!
March 27th, 2011
Although I like #1 the best, I think #4 has more of a story to it, and shows humour!
March 27th, 2011
6! such great timing, and interesting to anyone -- even if you're not a fan of the sport.
March 27th, 2011
I think I agree with most people. 1 & 6. 1 is clean and simple and shows the action and power of the game, And 6 is just such unusual shot, great timing. I Agree with Elliot, loose the guy on thew right and it would be even better.
I agree with your comments, just get to a local game and start snapping, such good fun.

And the winner is... (drumroll, please)...

SPEAR TACKLE!

Thank you all so very much for taking the time to let me know what you think of the pictures. You were all very kind and i really appreciated the constructive criticism and feedback.

I made some of the recommended changes - specifically "de-cluttering" the image, by cropping and photoshopping the player out of the right hand side of the image. The final version can be found here:

Again - thanks to everyone for their input. Its great to be part of such a supportive and inclusive community.
March 27th, 2011
I vote for 5! I love that headstand pose!!!
March 27th, 2011
I love 1 - it has a simple composition but shows the action well. Some of the others are too confusing to see what's going on. Number 6 is really funny, too, tough.
March 27th, 2011
PS: Maybe you could name the first one "Talk to the hand", if you don't think that's too silly ;)
March 27th, 2011
Oh sorry - I guess I was too late...
March 27th, 2011
4! Iove the action :)

March 27th, 2011
I know it's closed... but isn't 6 illegal???
March 27th, 2011
@andycoleborn It's a completely illegal move and really dangerous, Andy. These guys didn't even get sent to the sin bin.
March 27th, 2011
@elliotwb Seem it a few times in games... mainly done by you antipodeans... lol...
Great shots btw... I'd have gone with 6 or 3
March 27th, 2011
@andycoleborn I admit, we don't always play nice, but these big islander boys took it to a new level (not that I would argue with any of them!)
March 27th, 2011
@elliotwb haha true, the tongans and samoans certainly aren't guys you'd argue with.. if they say this is a fair tackle... it's a fair tackle...
