Daily Stats

July 7th, 2010
Have any other Ace members noticed that their daily stats aren't correct? Comments not showing up, different stats than the more detailed stats page? Is it just me? Am I missing something?

I really don't know, but I shall watch and see if I notice it.

Yes! I have noticed that the number of comments is often not correct. I have also noticed conflicting stats reports.

Nope it is not just you

I've noticed that I often have more comments than views. I've thought it quite magic that people can comment on a photo they haven't viewed ... but I wonder if it that some people comment right in their home feed and don't actually view the larger photo?

(I'm not an Ace member)

Lyn - that'll happen when people comment on your photo when it just the thumbnail on their homepage, without actually clicking on your photo to view the fullsize.

My stats are also confusing. How are they rated? For instance I'll have a photo in the #4 spot with 212 views and 46 comments, and then my #1 photo have 61 views and 13 comments..... I don't understand it.

Nicole - people adding your photos as favourites weighs more heavily than views or comments, so this might account for the skew you're seeing, as you didn't mention those figures. It's also time-sensitive, so a photo getting lots of views/comments/favourites rapidly will be scored (internally) different to one that keeps getting views/etc over a long period, although I'm not sure which is weighted more.

On the stats front themselves, they're cached and only updated every few hours. So unless you happen to look at them just after they've been updated, your stats for the day itself will always conflict with "reality".

There could also be timezone differences coming into play, as I think most of you are Americans, yet the site is UK hosted, so comments might be attributed to a different "day" than you think they are due to timezone offsets. Just a thought, I've no confirmation on this point!

Agree with Steve, the updates on your daily stats, etc. are not real-time so you have to wait until the next refresh for them to show up. I'm not sure how often that is.

I realize they are not real-time and the time zone definitely comes into play for me. However, yesterday my stats said I had 2 favs, yet the stats page only had 1 fav for the last week and none for the previous 24 hours. That is the sort of thing that is confusing me.

@Scrivna -Hi Ross,
@eyebrows - Hi Steve,
1) If the discrepancies were always consistent, a la the most recent span of time showed a lower count, that could explain it. But that is not always the case; it does seem there is incorrect data.
2) If the Time Zone comes into play, then that should mean that the system is calculating by calendar day, not time. The heading "Last 24 hours.." implies a rolling statistic, going back 24 hours from the present time. If it is a calendar day (whether are not local time zones are taken into account), the label might make more sense as "Yesterday."
3) Whether the top-left column shows measurement of the last 24 hours (rolling time) or measurement of yesterday's date (Midnight - Midnight, GMT), shouldn't those numbers be much closer in value to the numbers under "Total Counts: Yesterday" ?
4) I think it would be good to add a few footnotes to the stats page, explaining the meaning of the stats. i.e. a little 2 or * after "Last 24 hours..." and give short definition at bottom of page. Or else add an FAQ for it to the Help page, along with a "Data is buffered and updated at the top of the hour" or whatever it is.

My .02.
I much enjoy checking statistics. I do often notice that something is wrong in there, though.

A newbie Ace adding her confusion!
Since I've "Ace'd" I've been trying to find some consistency to my stats - to no avail! At times I think I've got the hang of it, but then whoops something happens and I have no idea!!
I love stats (sad, I know a lot of you will say) but I hope someone can give me a breakdown of how these work.
