365 lingo

August 3rd, 2012
I wondered if someone could help me understand the lingo in here. Both specific to 365project and photo lingo. Since I am not enlish speaking i am pondering on some of them.

A list of normally used lingo and shorts it would be great.

Offhand the only one I can think of is SOOC = straight out of camera (not edited or anything). There's probably loads more, sorry I can't help more! @ludvig

Hi Alf and welcome to 365! I was new to photography this year and these are a few of the terms I learnt quick
fav = short for 'favourite' - a shot of someone else's that you think is very special, by clicking on the +Fav button above their photo
dof = depth of field
pov = point of view
photobomb = when someone or something accidentally moves into your shot as you take it
And then there's many things someone might say about your photo eg
fab = fabulous
pop = the colours stand out
There's others of course, and apologies if you know these already.

FWIS- a challenge that some people do in which they take a shot of their feet at specific places (at work, at school, at the beach). It means From Where I Stand

MHO- My Humble Opinion (a variation on the one Shirley mentioned above)

p&s point and shoot a camera which does not have interchangeable lenses and usually has preset settings for general photography (for example these cameras usually have an icon of a mountain or tree for outdoor pictures).

b&w or b/w black and white

BTR Breaking the Rules This challenge usually involves going against a tried and true rule of photography. For example- purposely overexposing a shot.

I think the ones you'll see the most have already been mentioned. Don't be afraid to ask someone to clarify an abbreviation. This is the best site to ask questions. People are extremely gracious in answering them! And welcome!

PP can also mean post processing or post production. Have to take that one in context.

one thing I haven't seen anywhere else in photography, only on this site is the word 'selfie' for self portrait. but that might just be because I don't know a lot of things about photography lingo. haha :)

I often get "GFYS" and "STFU" on many of my helpful critiques I volunteer to the total random strangers on here. Still puzzling that one out... ;)
