Nifty fifty wedding f-stops

October 28th, 2012
I've been roped in to help take some photos at a wedding. I've owned a nifty fifty for about a year but I've never really given it as much use as I'd have liked to. I understand its principles but haven't had enough practice to have sussed out an optimal (range?) for setting the aperture. Any suggestions by anyone who frequently takes portraits and event photos with a nifty fifty?

I shot a wedding just recently - there were a few shots which weren't as bang on as I'd've liked them to be, and then realised I'd set to f/1.8 which was jsut too narrow for the couple to be both perfectly in focus - I'd've probably gone for a 3-4 instead to be sure! - particularly on the head to waist type shot

@lluniau Yes, the great thing about the nifty fifty is the ability to open up the aperture, but for a wedding shoot, you need to avoid this and aim for around f/9, so that more of the shot is in focus.

f/1.8 isn't your sweet spot, but f/4 will be. that should do the trick at your shooting distance on that lens. I found the same f/4 sweet spot on the dreamy Nikon 24-70mm lens (boy, I love that one).
