Just a random question! I'm sitting here eating gumbo, and I know it's a common dish down here in the Southern United States, but I'm wondering how many people live else where and have ate it? If you have ate it, what country are you from? If from America, what state do you live in? Thanks! :)
I encourage everyone to try it if you haven't before! It's lovely in cold weather (as it's like a soup)! If you happen to try it, I would love to here what you think of it! :)
Same story as TJ. I wonder what the stats are on the number of Texans with a Cajun in the family. Mine was uncle Edmund, we were not allowed to ride with uncle Edmund because he drove like a maniac but the man sho could cook.
I'm originally from New Zealand but live in Canada. Have travelled to the beautiful south and had to try all usual southern foods. Most are awesome but I'm just not a fan of sawmill gravy :) I make gumbo with Paula Deen's recipe often. Actually I use lots of her recipes :)
Not sure I count since my dad makes it once a month and he went to LSU so gumbo is a normal thing for me. I live in Pennsylvania currently, but we have a few places that sell gumbo.
i will try it but i'll PERSONALLY alter the following not- so-cool ingredients---like smoked sausage, margarine, worcestershire sauce and beef bouillon---the rest of the ingredients are quiet okey.--i've nothing against the recipe, sounds delicious but Healthy is the new Yummy :).....!!
@jodimuli Haha, you have to use all of the ingredients! One unhealthy meal won't hurt! And besides, the beef bouillon and worcestershire sauce is kind of necessary, or it won't be gumbo! It won't be too unhealthy! :)
There are a million gumbo recipes! I love quite a few of them! Having lived in various parts of the US I have had a chance to sample a bunch of regional specialties... the one I miss most is boiled crawfish.... especially this time of year!
Paula, we have a Culver's restaurant here and Cheese Curds are on the menu. I'm not sure where the restaurant is based. Wisconsin, maybe? @westcoastwallis
@jsw0109 I would take offense if I was a dish of poutine right now. But I'm not, so....que sera sera. You are missing out on a culinary delight my friend.
@kph129 I had to do that to finally try guacamole (baby poop). Now when I have it, I don't think of baby poop at all. I wonder if poutine would look more appetizing if it used white gravy... but gravy and cheese curds are not visually appealing at all.... even though individually I know both are great.
@westcoastwallis I'd probably have to eat it blindfolded initially... I'm sure its delicious - fries, cheese curds, and gravy.... yummy ingredients. I just wish it looked more appealing LOL
@jsw0109 ~ Agreed, it's not pretty (though, really, fries covered in cheese covered in gravy holds a certain appeal in my eyes), but you don't have to take a pic of it, just close your eyes and enjoy! :)
We have an American Diner here in Norfolk, UK (Arbuckles if anyone is interested) and they do the most delicious Gumbo. However, first time I tried it, no-one warned me of the intensity of the flavours ;)
@westcoastwallis Paula, i love poutine!! I'm from Holland but lived in Vancouver for six months in total last year and i loved it and always ate poutine after a night out (when the rest was having megabit pizza :P)
Hi Izayaa yes I have eaten gumbo because I make it! Yum yum! Yes from scratch cooking the roux. I live in Christchurch New Zealand, and have what I think is a great Cajun recipe book. The first time I cooked blackened fish was hilarious, and smokey!!

and they are delicious
Upon further investigation, we seem to be sorely lacking in poutine: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/440160
