Have you ever ate gumbo?

February 18th, 2013
Just a random question! I'm sitting here eating gumbo, and I know it's a common dish down here in the Southern United States, but I'm wondering how many people live else where and have ate it? If you have ate it, what country are you from? If from America, what state do you live in? Thanks! :)

If anyone is interested, Paula Deen has a fancy recipe on how to make gumbo completely from scratch! Here is the link: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/paula-deen/gumbo-recipe/index.html

I encourage everyone to try it if you haven't before! It's lovely in cold weather (as it's like a soup)! If you happen to try it, I would love to here what you think of it! :)

Nope... As appealing as it sounds its not on our menus here down under! Lol!

I live in Texas, but have relatives that are Cajun, needless to say I grew up on Gumbo. Awesome stuff.
February 18th, 2013
Same story as TJ. I wonder what the stats are on the number of Texans with a Cajun in the family. Mine was uncle Edmund, we were not allowed to ride with uncle Edmund because he drove like a maniac but the man sho could cook.

thx for the recipe, but my relatives would kill me if they ever found out I didn't use their own family recipe! LoL

I'm originally from New Zealand but live in Canada. Have travelled to the beautiful south and had to try all usual southern foods. Most are awesome but I'm just not a fan of sawmill gravy :) I make gumbo with Paula Deen's recipe often. Actually I use lots of her recipes :)

I live in Pennsylvania and have never had Gumbo. It does sound interesting, though.
February 18th, 2013
I've never had it, but I'd probably try it if I had the opportunity.
February 18th, 2013
I've never had it! Sounds good though :)
February 18th, 2013
Grew up on it, shrimp is the best.
February 18th, 2013
Gumbo is wonderful! Ate it in New Orleans and now make it at home! I am a Brit and live in Washington State.
February 18th, 2013
Not sure I count since my dad makes it once a month and he went to LSU so gumbo is a normal thing for me. I live in Pennsylvania currently, but we have a few places that sell gumbo.
February 18th, 2013
I grew up with gumbo, and .fried okra was a staple in our house in Missouri.....just made a pot recently here in NW Indiana. @izayaa
February 18th, 2013
From Rhode Island, but yes I've had gumbo. First time was on a trip to New Orleans ages ago.
February 18th, 2013
i will try it but i'll PERSONALLY alter the following not- so-cool ingredients---like smoked sausage, margarine, worcestershire sauce and beef bouillon---the rest of the ingredients are quiet okey.--i've nothing against the recipe, sounds delicious but Healthy is the new Yummy :).....!!
February 18th, 2013
@jodimuli Haha, you have to use all of the ingredients! One unhealthy meal won't hurt! And besides, the beef bouillon and worcestershire sauce is kind of necessary, or it won't be gumbo! It won't be too unhealthy! :)

Let me counter with...have you ever eaten poutine?
February 18th, 2013
@westcoastwallis Haha, I actually haven't! Haven't heard of it either. What is it?
February 18th, 2013
@izayaa it's a delicious Canadian dish consisting of fries, cheese curds and gravy. Best eaten late on a booze soaked evening:)
February 18th, 2013
@westcoastwallis Ohh, that does sound good! But what exactly are cheese curds?

February 18th, 2013
There are a million gumbo recipes! I love quite a few of them! Having lived in various parts of the US I have had a chance to sample a bunch of regional specialties... the one I miss most is boiled crawfish.... especially this time of year!
February 18th, 2013
I live in Colorado and I've eaten it. However, I prefer etouffee.
February 18th, 2013
Yes...here in Texas with plenty of Louisiana friends. It's not my fave. :(
February 18th, 2013
Paula, we have a Culver's restaurant here and Cheese Curds are on the menu. I'm not sure where the restaurant is based. Wisconsin, maybe? @westcoastwallis
February 18th, 2013
@doyouseewhatisee but do they serve poutine??
February 18th, 2013
That does not sound familiar. But they proudly announce they have WALLEYE when it's back in season. We're all like, "What the hell is walleye??" LMAO.

Upon further investigation, we seem to be sorely lacking in poutine: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/440160

@westcoastwallis
February 18th, 2013
@jplovescotton Haha yes! We eat boiled crawfish a LOT! I had some last night! Literally! Haha ;)
February 18th, 2013
@westcoastwallis So does the cheese curd melt?
February 18th, 2013
Yes! I've had gumbo once and loved it. My coworker here in Utah went to LSU. He can make a mean roux.
February 18th, 2013
@cmc1200 yes. And it's amazing.
February 18th, 2013
@westcoastwallis ~ oh, great, now I'm craving poutine!
February 18th, 2013
@kph129 me too! We've got one just over on Davie but I can't be arsed to walk over there now.
February 18th, 2013
Hoosier here (Indiana). Have had gumbo more than once but I prefer jambalaya when I'm cravin' cajun
February 18th, 2013
@westcoastwallis I've seen poutine but never tried it... it looks like vomit LOL
February 18th, 2013
@jsw0109 ~ Looks can be deceiving. If you can set aside the thought of how many billion calories you are consuming, it is bliss.
February 18th, 2013
@jsw0109 I would take offense if I was a dish of poutine right now. But I'm not, so....que sera sera. You are missing out on a culinary delight my friend.
February 18th, 2013
@kph129 I had to do that to finally try guacamole (baby poop). Now when I have it, I don't think of baby poop at all. I wonder if poutine would look more appetizing if it used white gravy... but gravy and cheese curds are not visually appealing at all.... even though individually I know both are great.
February 18th, 2013
@westcoastwallis I'd probably have to eat it blindfolded initially... I'm sure its delicious - fries, cheese curds, and gravy.... yummy ingredients. I just wish it looked more appealing LOL
February 18th, 2013
@jsw0109 ~ Agreed, it's not pretty (though, really, fries covered in cheese covered in gravy holds a certain appeal in my eyes), but you don't have to take a pic of it, just close your eyes and enjoy! :)

KJ
We have an American Diner here in Norfolk, UK (Arbuckles if anyone is interested) and they do the most delicious Gumbo. However, first time I tried it, no-one warned me of the intensity of the flavours ;)
February 18th, 2013
I live in Papua New Guinea and grow okra so I can eat gumbo, but I too prefer Jambalaya. Eating Wing beans tonight.
February 18th, 2013
@westcoastwallis Paula, i love poutine!! I'm from Holland but lived in Vancouver for six months in total last year and i loved it and always ate poutine after a night out (when the rest was having megabit pizza :P)

never tried or heard about gumbo @izayaa
February 18th, 2013
Hi Izayaa yes I have eaten gumbo because I make it! Yum yum! Yes from scratch cooking the roux. I live in Christchurch New Zealand, and have what I think is a great Cajun recipe book. The first time I cooked blackened fish was hilarious, and smokey!!
