This was borrowed by a Facebook "friend". I wouldn't have cared if she would have just asked! I guess I should add that she said she got it off the internet and not from my facebook account, but I know it's mine, because it is identical. So not only did she borrow my photo but said it wasn't mine!! Darn...
I have a number of shots that have been borrowed. Some of them are in our agency annual report and others a used for computer desktops by friends. I even have a few that have been borrowed for paintings. I have the advantage that I am always asked first I guess.
There's this sister of mine... actually, make that two of them... with such familiar profile pictures. They definitely did not ask permission. :-P @todimf @monkeykid
Giant, colorful, straight across the image watermarks will prevent this from happening. Maybe even put two or three watermarks......just to be safe. Safety first, you know?
@buttercup thank you - I am not too bothered because I take photos for pleasure and I am a bit pleased that someone thinks that they are good enough to steal, but if it was my living I would be very annoyed! @thethree lol
@chapjohn Thank you - I took it 6 years ago so the pain has gone lol. I think watermarks detract from the pleasure of viewing although I can see why people use them. If you really don't want someone to steal your photographs then you should only post tiny thumbnails or don't post at all.
Not so much my pics, but my wedding photographs have been used more times than I care to mention on funeral orders of services in the past year :( Guess it's a compliment really, but very weird that the last time these family members looked so healthy was at my wedding just 18 months ago.
Lots of people have used my pictures of them as FB profile pictures. This I don't mind, but it is nice to be asked. A few of my pictures have been used as FB banner picture, as long as it is by individuals I don't mind too much, but it bugs me a little.
One picture use that does bug me is a picture I took of a panel I built at work. The person who is the factory rep for some of the products in it asked if he could have a copy. I thought it was just for his files. A couple of months later I was looking up one of the products and found my picture in their brochure. On side of me was proud that they thought my work was good enough to use to promote the product. The other side was pissed that they used my picture. If they asked I would have happily given it to them. Now I tell the sales guy he at least owes me lunch. Still waiting. My picture is the top one on the right side of page one. http://www.attabox.com/pub/attabox_heartland_detail.pdf
@mcrt My friend wouldn't even give me credit for taking the picture! She said she got it off a site for Grand Teton National Park...now I would really like to see that, because they must have been in the same spot, the same time of year and the same time of day and focused their camera at the same exact spot I did!
@buttercup Not a very good friend. This is why, not so much here, but on the internet I almost always watermark. I know it was a big discussion here a couple of weeks ago. It can be distracting but at least it makes it a bit harder for someone to do what they did to you.
And it is a great shot, Mary.

And this one was "borrowed" by a local animal rescue group for their website:
