Need help figuring out what flower this is.

Thanks all for helping determine what this flower was.. It seems we are all in agreement that it is of the Heliconia family, most likely the Heliconia Psittacorum.

When I first saw this thought its bird of paradise but maybe not. But this is lovely. Great shot!

@cnlane Thanks Nelly. I'm thinking it's in the same family. Someone has already tried dragging and dropping into Google and I'm looked at many other pics of orchids and lillies to try to figure out what it is.

@grizzlysghost I had looked at those, but they seemed to be fuller/have more petals and didn't seem to open up as wide. I'm figuring it is of the heliconia family though which bird of paradise fall under as well. Thanks.

I'm wondering if you caught it in a late stage bloom...... @bernadette

Hmm... a person posted a "thread" last October with a similar problem; I'm afraid I wasn't much help then either. ;)

@grizzlysghost Thanks, I actually think you are right. That's the same one I had been leaning to.

Definitely looks like a Heliconia, maybe longiflora. There are so many odd cultivars and hybrids.

Looks like a heliconia to me. There are many varieties, this being a rather common variety.

@ipost4u @robv thanks. Heliconia it is then. Now that I look at it, those things in the middle are probably not stamens, but what petals had been attached to. Thanks for the help.

I would classify this as an orange flower. Not to be confused with blue and yellow flower classifications. lol

@chapjohn. I'm with you on that one .
Defininitly an orange clasification
April 6th, 2013
@chapjohn @plumtree500 Yes, definitely orange, not blue or yellow. :)

It's definitely a flower.

Have a look at the link above - scroll down and there is a photo of Parrot's Beak Heliconia (Heliconia psittacorum) which looks just like your photo. As someone mentioned above - I think your photo is missing a few petals in the centre which is confusing.
